Overview & Central Idea

Total Load Theory proposes a new paradigm for understanding, preventing, and addressing autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD, sensory processing disorder (SPD), learning disabilities (LD), and related mental health challenges. Rather than looking for a single cause, the book argues that accumulated stressors across many areas (“total load”) push the body and nervous system beyond its adaptive capacity, leading to symptoms and diagnoses.

Core Concepts

The “load” is the sum of genetic, biological, environmental, psychological, immunological, and toxic stressors a person experiences.

When these loads exceed one’s ability to cope (like a bridge carrying too much weight), the nervous system becomes dysregulated and symptoms appear.

Book Patricia S. Lemer for Your Next Event

Patricia Lemer is an author and educator dedicated to helping families better understand and support children with neurodevelopmental differences. She has written four influential books—Envisioning A Bright Future (2008), Outsmarting Autism (2014), Outsmarting Autism: Updated and Expanded (2019), and Total Load Theory (2025)—each offering practical guidance and hopeful perspectives for parents and professionals. Her work has reached a global audience, with The Expanded Outsmarting Autism also translated into two Vietnamese volumes, expanding access to her insights worldwide.

Total Load Theory shifts the focus from isolated symptoms to the whole person, recognizing that health, learning, and behavior are shaped by the cumulative impact of many small stressors. By identifying and reducing these burdens, families and professionals can support greater resilience, improved functioning, and a higher quality of life.
